A traditional morning meal in the average Swedish household probably will include two classics – bread and cheese. However, this isn’t the soft, white, almost crustless bread that you find in many American households. Instead, Swedes enjoy breads that are hearty, firm, and flavorful. Pair your slices with some well-aged cheese for an added protein and calcium “kick”!
Lunch and Dinner
What would a trip to Sweden be without a visit to a smorgasbord? Basically, this term refers to a “buffet” of various items, such as fish, cheese, and breads. Regardless of the restaurant or eatery where you dine on this smorgasbord, the offerings will usually be local and fresh. Try some Gravlax, a marinated salmon dish full of flavor. Or go for a traditional meatball offering with brown gravy with a side of mashed potatoes. And don’t forget the elk or reindeer – in Sweden, they grace the menu and add lean meat options for the health-conscious traveler.
The Sweet Stuff
In Sweden, you’re likely to find desserts of every shape and size, including cakes, pastries, fritters, cookies, and fresh fruit. However, resist the temptation to try everything; in this country, the inhabitants tend to value moderation. Plan to nibble enough to satisfy your taste buds but not enough to swell out of your trousers.
Beverages on the Menu
As in most countries, there are national and regional wines and beers to top off a good meal. Though you can’t go wrong trying the local brew or vino, it never hurts to ask your server for a recommendation. |
