Travel Tips - Money Matters Sweden

Preparing for Sweden
Financial Matters

If you’re planning to travel to Sweden, you need to know what medium of exchange you’ll be using. Here, we give a “blow by blow” of the best ways for visitors to this Scandinavian hotspot to pay for lodging, souvenirs, meals, and activities.

Major Credit Cards

First and foremost, if you don’t currently have a major credit card, it’s time to get one. With a MasterCard, Visa, or American Express, you’ll likely be able to purchase something in almost any store in the major cities. By using plastic, you won’t have to worry about exchange rates, plus you’ll have protection if your card is stolen or lost. You’ll also have a printout statement from your credit card company upon your return, so you can see exactly what you purchased and you’ll have a detailed record for your vacation files.

Krona

Unlike many other European countries, Sweden did not adopt the universal “Euro”; instead, this traditional kingdom chose to remain with the Krona as its currency. Coins and notes are available in a number of different amounts, and the exchange rate will fluctuate daily.

Traveler’s Checks

Even though traveler’s checks’ popularity has declined with the advent of credit cards, many individuals still swear by these old standbys. And some major shopping centers, accommodations, restaurants, and tourist areas will even take them without having you exchange them for Kronor (plural) first.

If you’re not sure what type of currency fits you best, you may want to try a mix of all three. That way, you can determine your style “on the spot” and feel financial free to explore all that this Norse kingdom has to offer.
